How business days are counted

A business day is any day that is not a weekend day and not a holiday. By default this calculator treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend and skips the 11 US federal holidays.

Between two dates

By default the start date is not counted and the end date is counted. Monday to Friday of the same week is 4 business days. Tick "Count the start date" to count both ends, which gives 5.

Adding business days

The start date is never counted. Day 1 is the first business day after the start date. Adding 1 business day to a Friday gives the next Monday, unless that Monday is a holiday.

Holidays on a weekend

A holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday on the Monday after. The calculator skips the observed date. New Year's Day on a Saturday is observed on Friday, December 31 of the year before.

Not included

State and local holidays, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Inauguration Day (a holiday only for federal workers in the Washington, DC area). Add any of these under "Other days off".

Example: business days between two dates

From Monday, November 2, 2026 to Monday, November 30, 2026, with the start date not counted and the end date counted:

  • 28 calendar days are counted, November 3 through November 30.
  • 8 of them fall on a Saturday or Sunday.
  • 2 are federal holidays: Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11, 2026 and Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, November 26, 2026.

That leaves 28 − 8 − 2 = 18 business days. The day after Thanksgiving is not a federal holiday, so it counts as a business day.

Example: adding business days

Adding 10 business days to Friday, December 18, 2026 gives Tuesday, January 5, 2027. Counting starts on the day after the start date. Along the way the count skips 6 weekend days and 2 holidays: Christmas Day (Friday, December 25, 2026) and New Year's Day (Friday, January 1, 2027). The result is 18 calendar days after the start date.

US federal holidays in 2026

These are the dates the calculator skips in 2026. The observed date is the day federal offices close.
